Have You Met...

You Don't Mess With The Prima J

Chicana cousins tell us about their debut album, being magazine cover girls and taming gossipmonger Perez Hilton.
By Jesús Triviño Alarcón

Prima J is not an R&B act. The pair of Mexican-American singing cousins prefers to call their brand of music "urban pop." Hey, it's better than "crunkchata"--sorry Toby Love. Janelle and Jessica Martinez first hit the music scene with their hit single "Rock Star" off the Bratz film soundtrack. While having a legion of 8-year-old fans is great for a Cheetah Girl, with their self-titled debut album, the girls hope to expand their audience beyond Mouseketeers. SiTV.com chatted with the foxy femmes about gracing the cover of Latina, being potty-mouthed pop singers and, if necessary, giving Perez Hilton a beating. Let's hope it's necessary.

SiTV.com: Tell me about your debut album.
Jessica
: It's a lot of fun. If you heard "Rock Star" that's a little younger because it was for the Bratz soundtrack. So the album is a lot more mature and older and more us. We definitely put our personalities into it. All the songs...young women, young men, teenagers, older people can relate to them. It's all around the board and I think people are really going to enjoy it.

SiTV.com: Congrats on the Latina cover. How was that experience?
Both
: Thank you!
Janelle: Being on the cover of Latina Magazine was so crazy. When me and my cousin see it on stands we still don't think it's real.
Jessica: It was such an amazing experience. We can't believe it happened. We're so blessed to have the opportunity and it's crazy.
Janelle: I feel like we did the magazine and put it on stands ourselves. (Laughs).

SiTV.com: Perez Hilton is one of your biggest supporters but he's known to turn on everyone. Are you ready when he starts drawing on your face?
Jessica
: Listen . . . (laughs). Honestly, we're always going to be who we are so if he doesn't like it then that's fine with us because we have each other. We have our family and we know who we are and we love who we are. So it doesn't matter to us. I think he's amazing and knows what he's talking about.
Janelle: Yea, he does know what he's talking about...sometimes.

SiTV.com: You got mad Echo Park for a minute.
Jessica
: (Laughs). I had to step back a minute.

SiTV.com: Why should people buy your album?
Janelle
: Because it's awesome and we said so.
Jessica: Because it's a great album and it's a sound people haven't heard anything like this before.
Janelle: Because there is a song on there for everybody....
Jessica: Who's in any mood of the day. You know how when you listen to albums and it's like all the same sound?
Janelle: It's not like that at all.
Jessica: Another reason is s**t because...it's hot. It's chilosa.

SiTV.com: I didn't know teenyboppers cursed?
Janelle
: We're not teenyboppers! (Laughs).
Jessica: We do say some things that are a little more mature that younger kids' parents wouldn't wanna hear. But there are songs for the young kids too.
