Part II: The Road to Jammin
Posted on: Wed, 04/16/2008 - 9:36pm
Adam B.
Members: Adam B.
Homebase: Fresno, CA.
Origins: "I got my start when I was 14," says Adam. "There was a rock/rap group down in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina and they let me [use] their portable recording studio to record some of my stuff. I do a lot of collaborative work with Mark Barnes. We met in Florida through a friend on MySpace. We would just jam in his garage and he's really good at making background music."
Quit Your Day Job: "Business management is my main source of income," says Adam. "I actually did some radio jingles as well."
"My music is [to be heard] by people of all types. It's all about open-mindedness," says Adam.
Mystery Hangup
Members: Cat, Bisou, Redd and lux
Homebase: Anaheim, CA
Origins: "We've been together for four years," says lux. "We were all in a Mexican music school where we were taught to play cumbia and rancheras. After two years we switched to hard rock. We met Redd through an OC Weekly ad we posted. And that's how we formed the group."
Quit Your Day Job: "I'm the only who has music as a fulltime gig," says lux. "Cat, Redd and I all have day jobs," says Bisou. "Let's just say we're behind a desk, there's a lot of paperwork and we answer a lot of phones."
"Our music is risky business. We like to incorporate a lot of [musical] styles," say the members of Mystery Hangup.
Sobre
Members: Roberto, Carlos, Oscar and Erick
Homebase: Chicago, IL
Origins: "The band [was] founded 10 years ago," says Roberto. "We've been through a couple of musicians because nowadays it's hard to find musicians who are really dedicated. Since then we've been working the underground scene in Chicago."
Quit Your Day Job: "I'm a database administrator, Charlie is a car technician, Oscar is a construction worker and Eric is in the plumbing business," says Roberto. "So we could actually start our own home improvement company." (Laughs).
"Our music is a very unique sound," say the members of Sobre.
Spellbound Escape
Members: Andrew Zalaket, Joey Thomasian, Nick Acker and Sean Garrison
Homebase: Los Angeles, CA
Origins: "We started about four years ago," says Andrew. "Joey and I started the band. [Initially] Joey was on the drums and I was on guitar and then we'd go back to add our vocals."
Quit Your Day Job: "We're trying to make it a fulltime thing that's why we moved to L.A. I could get a normal job but I wouldn't be happy," says Andrew.
"Our music is influenced by our Middle Eastern vibes as well as heavy metal and hard rock," says Andrew. "We take our listeners on a Spellbound Escape--away from all your problems."
The Motion Census
Members: Brad Aaron, Mando Lopez, Gil Rene Taylor and Daniel Cortez
Homebase: San Marcus, TX
Origins: "The band was [Mando's] brainchild," says Brad. "I opened the San Antonio Courier and the first ad I saw was ‘Vocalist needed.' I called Mando and went to [their] practice that night. I sat down and just listened to them play for three hours. The sound just evolved from there. Instead of fighting each other on how we should sound we just melded our sounds together."
Quit Your Day Job: "Gil and I are pretty much dedicated to this fulltime," says Brad. "Mando is a sheriff and Daniel is a manager at a sign company. But the dedication is really there from all of us."
"Our music is a dance-fueled slap in the face," says Brad. "So just get on and hold on."
