Livin' On The Edge

Extreme sports athlete Pablo Lanatta jumpstarts 2008 with his show Adrenalina on Si TV.
By Navani Otero

While most Argentinean kids were safely playing on soccer fields, Pablo Lanatta was teaching adults to windsurf. He managed to turn his love of the extreme into a career and now shares it with audiences everywhere as co-host of the extreme sports show Adrenalina. Starting with a January 1st marathon, Si TV brings you Adrenalina so you too can see the world through the eyes of Lanatta and Zalman Lekach, two intrepid and adventurous extreme sports pro athletes. Co-host Lanatta tells [Si] Entertainment why Adrenalina is not for the faint of heart.

[Si] Entertainment: What is the premise of Adrenalina?
Pablo Lanatta: The goal of the show is to travel to many exotic parts of Latin America, where many people wouldn't dare go and tap into the undiscovered extreme sports talent there. So places like Ecuador, Colombia, where people would normally be scared to travel, you can see up close and personal. Most action sports athletes are shown here in the United States, but I've talked to people and there is just as much extreme sports talent in Latin America as there is in the United States. Besides finding local talent, you will get a sense of the lifestyle and culture there.

[Si] Entertainment: What can Si TV viewers expect to see on Adrenalina?
PL:
Some really crazy things happen in Latin America. For example, for some skateboarding we went to Ecuador and there was a site that wasn't actually finished, and we jumped over a fence and half way through our session there was a guy with a machete and shotgun threatening us [laughs]. So basically you can expect things that don't normally happen here in the U.S.

[Si] Entertainment: How did you come to be the show's co-host?
PL: The show originated in 2000. I started the show in the garage of a friend's house in Oceanside, CA. Through the years of working and airing [on] different networks it's grown to what it is today. Now we have expanded into retail stores and two syndications, one in Spanish and one in English. We also have a company under the umbrella of Adrenalina that publishes three magazines as well.

[Si] Entertainment: How is Adrenalina different from other extreme sports shows?
PL:
The biggest difference is the locations we shoot at, and the entire premise of the show, which is helping give Latinos exposure. Also, what we do sometimes is bring an athlete from the U.S. to Latin America. For example, like Peter Mendia, we took him surfing in Brazil. Another example was we took Chad Knight, a skater, to Argentina. So we have taken many athletes abroad.

[Si] Entertainment: How did you first get into extreme sports?
PL: It's something I've done all my life. I am from Argentina, it is said that Argentineans play soccer, well I don't. I suck at soccer [laughs]. So, I've always windsurfed instead since I was a kid. When I was 14 I taught a class of people to windsurf, so it's something I've always done. Then I picked up a camera and started shooting friends. Then just editing videos for fun and from there the opportunity to produce a show came about.

[Si] Entertainment: Have you ever broken any bones in your sports career?
PL: Yes. I've broken my clavicle riding a bike and snowboarding I've dislocated my shoulder off a jump. I tried what you call a "method" when you hold your board with one hand to the side, and my entire body slipped and I landed on my teeth! As my body was turning my shoulder came out.

[Si] Entertainment: Was that your worst injury?
PL: Yes, I would say so. I think dislocating your shoulder is the worst pain ever, even worse than breaking a bone. Because all you tendons and ligaments are stretched all the time continuously, so it hurts all the time. When you break a bone it cracks, and you just lay still and you won't feel as much pain. But when you dislocate something, you are stretching so badly, after awhile it turns yellow, it's so painful.

[Si] Entertainment: What is the most amazing stunt you've ever done?
PL:
Getting certified to jump out of planes and then doing it alone. Thanks to Zalman I got certified to skydive. I think that's the best thing you could ever do, the most challenging thing you could ever do.

[Si] Entertainment: What tips do you have for those aspiring to get into extreme sports?
PL:
Know your limits. Life is short, you only live once. Lastly, there is no time to waste, just do it! OK that sounds too much like a Nike commercial [laughs], just get out there!
