Harold & Kumar Escape From Guantanamo Bay
Posted on: Fri, 04/25/2008 - 1:57pm
After finally going to White Castle and scarfing down about 5,000 burgers Harold (John Cho) and Kumar (Kal Penn) are getting ready to fly to Amsterdam to try and win the affections of Harold's crush, Maria (Paula Garces). And smoke some weed. But a misunderstanding on the flight results in the boys being mistaken for terrorists. They escape from Guantanamo Bay and try to prove their innocence while preventing Kumar's ex Vanessa (Danneel Harris) from getting married.
The whole Guantanamo thing lasts for about five minutes in the movie. It's probably one of the reasons why this film has been re-titled so many times because no title can really fit it. While on the run, special agent Ron Fox (Rob Corddry) tries to track them down. H&K is filled with stereotypical racist humor that goes way overboard. And I loved every minute of it.
Unfortunately, the film is one of those sequels that get too big for its own good. Yes, it has the raunchy scenes like Kumar whacking off in bed, and the scenes with Neil Patrick Harris are priceless. But the plot gets in the way of the fun adventure. Sidetracking things is Kumar's quest to win back his ex-girlfriend. We get some flashback scenes and learn that it was this ex-girlfriend who got Kumar into smoking cheeba. The chase scenes get a bit old and you see the direction the film is heading in and the predictable ending.
Harold and Kumar end up racing cross country while being chased by the FBI. They encounter a bottomless party, a meeting with the KKK, and a farmer and his hot wife who have a surprise in their basement, and they even run into President Bush near the end. Harris shows up around the middle of the movie but isn't in the film for long. It's a shame because his character is way more interesting to watch than Harold and Kumar. I was hoping that the movie would end up just dumping Harold and Kumar off somewhere so the rest of the film could focus on Harris' insane portrayal of himself.
Cho always seems like he could fall asleep at any second and doesn't seem to put a lot of energy into his character, even in scenes where he's yelling at Penn's character. Penn was good and I liked how out of touch he portrays Kumar. They try to have scenes that test their friendship, but it's all bulls**t and didn't need to be in the film. Two screw-ups fighting over who's the bigger screw-up doesn't do it for me. It's actually Cordrry and Harris who steal the movie from the main characters. Cordrry really takes his character overboard and his subtle movements and line delivery were fantastic.
If you liked the first one, you'll more than likely dig the sequel. It's not the greatest movie out there, and if they do a third, they should expand on their international adventure. The plot is a bit scattered and it slows down at times, but there are enough laughs in between to keep you entertained.
