Grand Theft Auto: A Retrospective

In celebration of the release of GTA IV, Si takes a look back on the most revolutionary video game franchise in history.

Grand Theft Auto: The first installment hit the original Playstation in 1997. It looked nowhere near as it does nowadays, it was a top-down 2D view, but the theme was the same. You are a criminal roaming around a city, carjacking and committing crimes. There wasn't much of a story, however, and just consisted of earning points, having only five lives, and trying to get to the next level.

Grand Theft Auto 2: Debuting in 1999 on Playstation, the gameplay was still a top-down 2D view but it had a story. You played as Claude Speed, a criminal who was freed from prison after waking up from a cryonic sleep but with amnesia. "Anywhere City" consisted of different gangs that Speed ran missions for, even though his ulterior motive was to take over the city. The gameplay was just like its predecessor but this time the graphics were a bit smoothed out.

Grand Theft Auto III: In October 2001, GTA III changed the video game landscape forever. Not only did the series move into 3D visuals in the form as a third person shooter and driving game, but developer Rockstar Games created a gigantic city. From the ease of car-jacking, to making hits, to trying to outrun SWAT teams with helicopters, GTA III was one of most revolutionary video games in history, making every other developer copy the concept of an open-world environment.

Grand Theft Auto: Vice City: 2002's Vice City follows Tommy Vercetti, a mafia member recently released from prison, who tries to find out who is responsible for a drug deal gone bad. The twist? It all takes place in 1986, with the clothes, cars and their radio stations reflecting the experience of living in the ‘80s. VC went all out and tapped Ray Liotta, Dennis Hopper, Burt Reynolds, Gary Busey, Luis Guzman, Danny Trejo and a host of others to voice some of the main characters.

Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas: In SA you play as Carl "CJ" Johnson in the year 1992. CJ is a gang member who returns to Los Santos (Los Angeles) to find out his mother was murdered and his gang crumbling. Throughout the game he investigates the murder of his mother, rebuilds his gang, and tries to make his money. Some of the new things added to the game are the ability to swim and ride bikes plus being able to hook up CJ with different outfits, haircuts and fighting styles.

Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories: Liberty City Stories is a prequel to GTA III that takes place in 1998. Released originally on the PSP, you play as Toni Cipriani, a mafia hitman who is making resurgence. Of the few new things, there's a ferry that takes you between Portland and Staunton Islands because the tunnel in GTA III has yet to be completed.

Grand Theft Auto: Vice City Stories: As expected, Vice City Stories is constructed like the previous GTA titles, but this time you play as Victor Vance, a U.S. Army Soldier. He gets involved in some minor drug trafficking and gets discharged dishonorably from the military. With nothing now, he might as well go all in right?

Grand Theft Auto IV: You star as Niko Bellic, an Eastern European who immigrates to Liberty City with hopes of living the American Dream. Liberty City is gigantic, with four boroughs including a New Jersey-like city. Stealing a car now involves breaking a window and hot-wiring it, all cars have a GPS device, and your cell phone plays an integral part of your life in LC. For Xbox 360 owners, this fall and in spring 2009, you'll be able to download "episodic content;" an additional 10 hours of gameplay each. Are you in the mood to carjack anyone yet?
