Christmas Unwrapped!
Posted on: Fri, 12/21/2007 - 4:44pm
Christmas, oh the memories! From leaving Santa cookies and milk to getting that new bike you were dying for as a kid. Or perhaps just getting a 12-pack of Costco brand socks. Think you had it rough, you're not alone. Read as your favorite celebs and [Sí] bloggers share their best and worst Christmas presents.
[Si] Ent.: What was the best gift you ever received for Christmas?
Ashanti: That's a hard one. I love jewelry; I got some really nice jewelry last year. Also, I got some really hot pajamas with my name written across the back in rhinestones, that's always a winner with me, and fuzzy socks, I love fuzzy socks.
Lynx Garcia: A 2004 Land Rover from my father. I really thought he bought the car for himself because all week he was driving me around in it and asking me if I liked it, and I was like yeah of course it's hot. Then on
Christmas Eve he gave me the key. I was just waiting for him to tell me it was a joke; I thought I was getting punked [laughs]. So that was the best.
Fat Joe: A hot meal [laughs].
Kris Cruz: When I was 12 one of my cousins gave me a Playboy [magazine] for Christmas from the trunk of his car, I'll never forget that. The funny thing was it wasn't even a new issue it was all old and s**t with some pages stuck together. And I remember that one chick from Full House was on the cover, but it definitely opened me up to a whole new world that I'm still exploring to this day.
Ivan Sanchez: My best gift was when I was about eight years old; my mother was a single mother, she raised us on welfare and she worked off the books to try to give us those extras. Needless to say, single mom, three kids, there are not a lot of extras. So, one Christmas morning she comes into the living room with two brand new bicycles, and one was for me. It was a like a yellow, dirt bike. To this day, and that was like 25 years ago, I'll never forget the feeling I had when I got that.
Jehuniko: The best gift I could ever have was my baby girl who is two years old [now]. Her name is Cirita. As for a gift in the more conventional way, there was a time when [we] were really poor so just to get
any gift made me really ecstatic. So, in the ‘80s, Smurfs were really popular. I got this talking Smurf doll and I thought it was the best thing ever. I must've been like four years old or something like that.
[Si] Ent.: What was the worst gift you ever received for Christmas?
Kris: I got a gift card for SuperCuts like in the seventh grade! My Auntie got it for me, I had never been to SuperCuts before, and my Mom usually took me to ol' boy up the street for $5. My mom being the Jew that she is, wasn't about to spend $20 for me to get my haircut. So I was excited to go get a pricier haircut, but I ended up walking out of there with a bowl-cut thicker than Mo from the Three Stooges. Plus I got clowned on at school for like two weeks, I wanted to burn that SuperCuts down, still do.
Lynx: My father's aunt once made a dress for me. It looked liked she just cut two triangles out of fabric and then made some armholes in it and called it a day, it was horrible! And I had to wear it! I was 11, so you know I already started with the Pumas and my sweat suits, and matching the laces, you know back then I was fly. So, we are going to a party in the Bronx and everybody is fresh to death out there, and my mom made me wear the dress 'cause we were going over there for Christmas. We took the train there and I was crying on the entire train ride ‘cause I thought people were looking at me. That was the worst.
Jehuniko: Some of the wack clothes that relatives would give me, the turtleneck sweaters that just stay in your closet ‘cause you don't want to throw them away [laughs].
Ivan: When you grow up in a single parent home, on the poor side of things, there is just no such thing as a bad gift.
