The Urban Wheels Awards in Detroit were indeed the Oscars of the Auto Industry. Celebrities came in alongside some of today's most influential African-American, Latino and Asian executives in the Auto Industry. Co-hosted by the lovely Rosie Perez who attended with a broken toe, cast and cane, she candidly explained, "I quickly learned not to mix rum and a ladder." Her handsome co-host was Entertainment Tonight's Kevin Frasier. The two made for a humorous evening honoring those making achievements in Motor City, throughout the country and even the world. Other celebrity guests included MC Lyte, Musiq Soulchild (who also performed), Damon Dash, Lisa Vidal, Giancarlo Esposito, Sway, Evander Holyfield (who didn't allow me to take his picture...lol...in fact he rolled his eyes at my little digital cam flashing alongside huge photographer cams), and some other beautiful actresses whose names I can't remember. Although the event coordinators didn't seem to focus greatly on communication, especially with their presenters who didn't seem to know what was going on half the time, the evening turned out to be a very pleasant time honoring those in the Auto Industry. Big up to David Rojas of GM who is a 31-year-old Peruvian designer responsible for the new Hummer design and was the man they called upon when Hummer wanted to introduce a smaller version of the widely recognizable SUV. All-in-all I had a great time in Motor City. The people were polite, the nightlife was tight and Motown's elite approached everything with class and prestige. So much for Detroit being the murder capital of the world and one of the poorest cities in the nation. I got to see the other side of the D. The thriving and ever changing side with African-American, Latino and Asian executives making waves in the pulse of the city. Never thought I'd say this before...but I will be back in Motor City soon!!!
