Have You Met...

Ocote Soul

Police should be required to meditate. This is an idea that struck me a few years back when Martín Perna first mentioned it, and has stuck with me since.

Political reformation, art as social progress, sustainable living-- all of these areas hold promise for Perna, whose discography is nearly 50 albums deep, including work with the Antibalas Afrobeat Orchestra (of which he is the founder), Brownout, Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings, Beck, and TV on The Radio.

As Ocote Soul Sounds with Adrian Quesada, Perna's latest release, the Alchemist Manifesto, charts a rolling tour of Yoruba groove, brownstone funk, and ethereal chants through swirling flute lines and bright horns.

To cross paths with Martín is to be put on to something entirely new, or something old that you've slept on for too long. It might be a piece of music or a group you need to hear, a book that could contribute to a conversation you've been having with yourself, or a recipe for healthy eating. Whatever it is, it's worth finding, and worth remembering.
