Have You Met...

Mamita Empanaditica

Alright. I was just taking a break from some work. I figured, you know, I'll see what's happening around the world-- presidential primary business, Kenya's still f'd up, some dogs inherited an 800k estate from thier deceased owner, you know, regular stuff-- And then this:

"Two men were arrested on Tuesday after pushing a corpse, seated in an office chair, along the sidewalk to a check-cashing store to cash the dead man’s Social Security check." De que chingados?? It continues, "When Virgilio Cintron, 66, died at his apartment at 436 West 52nd Street recently, his roommate and a friend saw an opportunity to cash his $355 check, the police said."

So the first thing that comes to mind is, only in New York. Then I got to thinking, You know what? This could've happened in any city where you have check cashing stores every couple of blocks, a social security system that throws insubstantial cheese to the hungry, and a couple of mensos thinking they could actually pull that bullshit off. That means Mexico City, Bogota, Caracas...

But the best part, although I woud really have like these fools to have pulled it off-- I mean, the dead guy didn't need the dough, and the government sure don't deserve the money, i don't even care if those fulanos were gonna get high off it-- if they got the nerve to try stunts, I gotta root for 'em. Anyway, the best part is this:

"While the two men were inside the check-cashing office, a small crowd had gathered around the chair. A detective, Travis Rapp, eating a late lunch at a nearby Empanada Mama saw the crowd and notified the Midtown North station house."

Mama Empanada?? You're killing me. In this story, where are the latinos? One has been dead for 24 hours; maybe two are working for the check cashing spot, maybe one is trying to cash the check of his dead friend, maybe four or five have stopped on the sidewalk to ask themselves why dude is dead in his chair on teh sidewalk, and then as if all that weren't enough, some enterprising family from Jackson Heights has a chain called Mama's Empanadas, employing a collection of Latinos who won't have to sit dead in the cold or scheme to cash checks that don't belong to them. I'm blown away. I probably have a cousin in this story somewhere. Let me call my primo.
