2007: The Year in Review

Marcos’ Biggest

Events/Changes in 2007

5. Lights Out//Events///Miami

2007 has been a busy year for me.  We held several events, performances, and concerts.  The biggest of the years events we held was the Lights Out Concert.  Lights Out was a very elaborate concert we held in celebration of Blackout’s 5th anniversary.  The concert featured over 30 dancers, a movie theater sized video screen, live instruments, and special making the album segments between sets.

Aside from Lights Out we also hosted our first White Party, which featured Live Performances, Japanese food, dancing to Reggaeton, Salsa, Hip Hop, and Bachata. Havana Night also followed.  The 2nd annual Havana Night was the elaborate Cuban themed release party for the Blackout Revolution.

4.My Return to the Stage

After years of hard working setting up Blackout I finally found myself in a position where I could perform once more.  It almost felt like the old dance group days of my childhood.  It has been amazing seeing how I can make people react with my music.  This is why I do what I do.  Check out the YouTube page for some performance vids.

3.The Return of Salsa Night

After years of trial and error doing Pueblo’s only Salsa Night, I was convinced to give it one more try at a new resturant/bar/club called The Venue, located in the upscale downtown area. This time it has been very well received throughout the community.  It has become a home to many dance enthusiasts on Friday Nights.

2.The Blackout Revolution is the album that is considered our first official release.  My brother Armando and I spent over a year working on it, obsessing over every song, every verse, and the overall flow of the album.  The album is finally here and its amazing!  Im so proud of it and its starting to make a lot of noise.  The album combines elements of Hip Hop, R&B, Flamenco, Reggaeton, New Wave, Salsa, Merengue, and other world sounds.  This album has been the main focus of 2007 and it continues to direct my actions as the new year begins.  We made it with the intention of it opening doors.  Now that it is starting to happen I have already began planning what could become The Revolution 2...

 1.My Father’s Accident:

On October 21st, of 2007 my father Guillermo Garibay had a accident that changed his life and the life of everyone in his family.  My father crashed his bike after hitting a unexpected road dip.  The accident occurred at around 4:00 p.m 15 miles out of town.  He had landed head first into the ground and as a result, he broke his back and neck.  Unaware of how serious his injuries where my father was able to ride and walk his bike 5 miles to get to where I could find him.

After a horrible week in the ICU we brought my father home.  In order to keep his bones aligned correctly the doctor gave my father a Halo.  The Halo is a metal frame that surrounds his chest and back and is secured by screws in his skull. The transition has not been easy for him.  Anyone who knows my father knows that he is a very active man and the loss of mobility has taken its toll on my fathers spirt.  The months of October - December where very hard for our family.

I don’t wanna make this whole blog about the accident.  You can read about it more in my previous blogs or read the article in the Recovery, Revolution, and Reinvention photo album.  I did however, want to explain why this is the most important event of 2007 for me.  The biggest reason is that it brought my family closer together.  The week we spent in the ICU also brought back some unpleasant familiar memories of our mothers death.  The accident reminded me that none of us are invincible and that everyday is a gift and opportunity.  During this ordeal I was also going through my own personal conflict and inner turmoil.  I was unsure of the direction I was heading, especially in regards to my career.  As a result of helping my father I was able to change a lot of my actions and focus my energies in way that would bring me closer to my goals and dreams.

Its crazy that the biggest things in my life this last year are not really centered around me, but others close to me.  The traumatic events in their lives have helped to change my perspective on life.  One of my struggles was dealing with and accepting the fact that I cannot control every situation or help everyone I want to.  The best I can do is pray and be the best person I can be.  Im becoming this person, the recent changes have brought amazing results already.  I think this change and its results are just getting started...

NEW ADDITIONS:

Anyone that knows me well knows that Im a big fan of Marvel Comics.  Sometimes its easy for me to find parallels with my life and the stories I read.  Like any great comic there is a main character and a strong foundation of supporting characters.   Some characters come and some go, and every once in a while new characters come in that help make the story more exciting.  Here are a few of the new “characters” that have come into my life this year...

Xavier Jones aka Reflecshaun:  In June I was introduced to a “new rapper” named Xavier.  He came to the studio and I was immediately impressed by his talent.  Reflecshaun became involved with Blackout just as we where close to finishing our year long endeavor, The Blackout Revolution album.  He was able to help us complete The Revolution, he added the last little touch that the album needed to be as well rounded as it is.  We were also able to record his Radio Edit mixtape which is going to be released in January of 2008.  Since he joined our team I cannot count the events, studio sessions, music talks, and laughs we have had.  Xavier has proven himself to be a great friend and asset to my company and its future.

Juan Alvarez:  During the three months I worked at Guitar Center in 2007 I came across Juan Alvarez.  While working the door at work I noticed Juan playing a guitar and singing out loud in the store, as if the people came to the store to hear him sing instead of shop.  We talked for at least 45 minutes in the store and within a week Juan was recording music for the Blackout Revolution.  We actually recorded what I consider to be some of the most beautiful music I’ve ever been involved in.  Juan has become a great  friend and a respected musician over the last year.  I am especially thankful to Juan for coming through for the Lights Out Concert and for helping out the way he and his family did when my father was in the hospital.  Im currently in the middle of recording Juan’s solo album and it is already proving to be a amazing experience.

Berlinda and The Venue:  I started 2007 with no hope for Salsa in Pueblo.  I had already organized and DJ’d at least 3 different Salsa Nights in Pueblo and each one in one way or another failed.  This was due to lack of support from the community and the place that it was held at.  In June I was convinced by my father and his assistant to give it one more try at a new resturant/bar/club called The Venue.  We have never had such a successful run on Salsa Nights like we did the summer of 2007.  People of every age, race, and status where dancing outside in the beautiful courtyard of The Venue underneath the stars.  The most memorable of al was the now legendary “Salsa in the Rain”.       We had started Salsa Night on a cloudy August Thursday.  Just as is started to rain more people arrived and I was in the middle of a dance.  I did not stop as the rain fell harder, within moments everyone was dancing, soaking wet as it rained all through the night.  It was truly a unforgettable evening.  Aside from Salsa The Venue and its owner Berlinda have taken many chances with me.  They allowed me to host my 2nd annual Havana Night there in addition to Dancing With The Coyotes, a fundraiser we organized to raise money for my fathers new youth bike team.   Stating the first week of 2007 we will begin providing live entertainment on Saturday Nights at The Venue, in additon to the return on Salsa Night, where I play the hottest Salsa, Merengue, Bachata, Reggeton, and Dancehall!

“Bella”:  Looking back on the year as a whole its easier for me to sum up what this person has meant to me through year.  Normally I do not really talk about my personal life too much on my MySpace but this is a special situation.  We met as friends with much in common (dancing and music).  Eventually I caught feeling for my friend who I nicknamed Bella.  Although I kept my feeling inside for the majority of the year, they did leak out in other ways.  My feeling for Bella played a major role in the inspiration for 3 of the songs that where on the Blackout Revolution, including the albums first single “Before I Go”.  I eventually was not able to keep my feeling inside and ended up telling Bella days before she left on vacation for a month.  Ironically the song is about falling in love with a friend and keeping it in until you leave town.  My timing however, was not great so I made a decision to move on.  In doing so I found myself in a situation where I was getting closer to someone else.  As that relationship progressed my past feeling for Bella surfaced, and out of that the song “Can’t Let Go” was born.    Both songs have received a warm response from many people of all ages.  The subject matter is very relatable, I have been told several times that the songs actually helped people in similar situations. Maybe this is why I had to go through everything.   I did not end up with Bella but I do not believe that knowing her was a bad thing for me.  I admire her for going full speed after her dreams.  I thank her for the inspiration that helped make The Revolution what it is.  I do not know if she will be a “character” in 2008.  But I wish her the best in life and in her career.

Kendra:  Kendra was introduced to me through a mutual friend this September.  Kendra works for Universal Music Distribution (UMD) in the Sales and Marketing Division.  Throughout the last few months I have been talking to her in hopes of opening some doors for me and my brother’s production company.  She has taken me serious enough to allow me to send her my press kit and extra copies for some of her friends in the business.  It is still very unreal to me but my reason for including Kendra on this list is not because of what she can do for me.  It is because of the feeling I had when I shipped her the large package with 10 press kits and CDs.  It was exciting when I looked on the destination address that read “Universal Music Distribution” it reminded me that Im playing for keeps.  It reminded me that even in my darkest of hours I was still willing to full heartedly chase my dream.  Weather she likes the music or not is not the point.  I is the fact that she was willing to give me a chance to get her attention.  This has meant a lot to me especially as I found myself questioning the decision I had made years ago to pursue my dream with everything I have.   People like Kendra help me to realize that I have made the right choice.

Desiree:  I take inspiration from many sources: music, life, love, family, and people.  I have been fortunate enough in my life to have meet some people with a drive similar to my own.  Desiree is one of these people.  She is proof that you can do what you love and be a successful person.  Although she is not involved in the music industry I’m able to draw inspiration from her and use it to better myself in my quest to make my dream a reality.  As a result of meeting Desiree I have been able to manage my time much better and Im also in the beginning stages of a new self imposed program to make myself more physically fit.  Of all the new characters that have come into my life Desiree is one of the most intriguing.  I have just meet her but I am already anxious to learn more about her.  Im hoping that my new beautiful friend becomes a bigger character in 2008.  Who knows what the future holds!
