Anti-Columbus Day Show: Thankstaking Weekend 11.24.07

We are all getting ready to get stuff next Thursday (turkey day for some of us). A day that it really is suppose to be about family, a day where we are suppose to be thankful. Don't get me wrong, i love days off from the 9-5 to spend with the family, kids and friends who seem to be more abundant when they know you mother in-law would be cooking but does that mean that by taking the day off and cutting the pavo and eating la potato ensalada that you are approving of a holiday that has a dark past?
You see for the past 3 years i have been involved with local rapper and organizer Felipe Cuahtli (www.losnativos.com) and other activists to promote and put together a show that brings awareness to the other side of Columbus Day and the other non-inclusive indigenous people holiday (Thanksgiving) through the power of music and spoken word. The other side we are referring to is the one that most high schools history books seem to miss or never expand on. I was always amazed how the massacre of indigenous people was never seen as something worth having a discussion about in the schools. How Columbus "discovered" North America and how the Pilgrims had a nice sit down dinner with their indigenous neighbors and that was the end of that. At this point i am pretty sure some of you are saying under your breath, "that was so long ago, why make a big deal?". Fair question, i make it a big deal for me because i was never told about my indigenous roots, i knew i had them, but never knew the history. I learned about it through books and visits and i feel that i need to use my privilege to speak on it. because many of the indigenous people in the world are being oppressed, they are voiceless and the inequities that they faced are unacceptable. So what does this have to do with turkey day aka Thanksgiving? Plenty, this year Anti-Columbus Day celebration has been combined with the other non-indigenous inclusive holiday thanksgiving to create 5th Anti-Columbus Day Celebration and giving a new meaning to "Thankstaking" weekend. The line up includes Los Nativos, Cihuatl Ce, Poison Pen, Diabolic and MaddIllz, wahwahtay Benais, Quese IMC, Angel and many more.So if you happen to be in Minnesota( yes there is brown people in Minnesota!) and want to catch some good music and get educated at the same time, look this show up. You won't be disappointed.
