It's not an easy task to make a game based on the Olympics. The developer is tasked with recreating dozens of sports where even one Olympic event could be a game itself. But the folks at Sega and Eurocom are up for the challenge.
Beijing 2008 features almost 40 sports which range from swimming, track and field, archery, gymnastics and a host of others. Each sport is controlled differently, whether it's alternating between A and B for a swim or timing throws with the analog sticks for the discus toss, it's like you're learning a new game for each event. Even though the controls aren't that difficult, it may take a couple of runs to get a feel with what you're supposed to do, especially when it comes to getting a good boost off the blocks in a race using the triggers.
The main mode of the game is Olympics mode where you get to manage your country's team and participate in the events. For each day of the Olympics, you have the goal of maybe finishing in the top three in two out of five events. As the days move forward, you're may be required to win a medal in an event, which may become difficult if you're not very good at kayaking or diving. When the day ends, you're given points to help boost your team in speed, stamina, strength and more disciplines.
The other mode is Competition mode where you can go online and challenge any of your friends in any of the events.
It's a pretty straight-forward game that any Olympic fan might enjoy, but at the same time, we're not sure if it's really worth the $50.
