Have You Met...

[REVIEW] Dark Sector (Xbox 360): Lopping off legs hasn't been more fun..

Dark Sector begins with you as Hayden Tenno, a secret government agent who is charged with invading a Russian stronghold in an effort to find a maniacal terrorist named Mezner. Mezner has this chemical weapon and virus of sorts that turns people into zombies and other weird creatures and creations. He has possible plans to spread it. Once you enter the stronghold you realize the depth of the situation and before you know it, you're infected with the virus, but it's only your arm. Your arm becomes metallic and you develop some sort of Chinese star, Krull-type of boomerang weapon called a Glaive that you toss towards enemies and cut off their appendages. As the game moves forward, you'll also be able to use it to grab items from afar, open locked gates, capture electricity, fire and ice and even direct the path of the weapon using Aftertouch ( PS3's version uses Sixaxis but you use the analog sticks on Xbox 360).

The game play is very similar to Gears of War. Tap a button to hide behind a wall, quickly motion to get behind another wall, press A to jump over a barricade to keep moving forward or press A again to sprint. While you do have the Glaive to toss at people, using the right bumper, your other hand carries a fire arm that you use with the triggers. There's also the option of melee battle where you can swing your Glaive around like a switch blade, but it's actually a bit difficult when you're in some dark sewer being attacked by multiple zombies. You feel like your swinging and hitting everything in sight but you keep on getting hit. You realize you haven't been hitting anyone and you miss a lot of the time. It's a bit frustrating so it's better to back up and blast on dudes. You can use both weapons simultaneously, but there are times where you might need some extra firepower. Before you got infected with the virus, you could pick up any weapon on the ground and use it, but now you can only use it for a limited amount of time before it overloads and becomes useless. The only way to get bigger firepower than your 9mm is the Black Market.

Every now and then you'll come across some manhole on the ground, which is where the Black Market is. You can buy weapons, like an AK-47 or shotgun, that won't over load on you as well as upgrade current weapons by giving it a larger clip, having it fire faster, or do more damage; which is definitely helpful when it comes to your pistol. The upgrades and weapons are very expensive however, so make sure you're getting and upgrading what you want because you won't make enough money to buy or fully upgrade every weapon. Choose wisely.

The graphics are decent. Your main character looks very cool and the zombie creatures are scary looking. The only complaint is that the game is dark for most of the story. There are some environments that are outside, but most of it is indoors and it gets a bit repetitive. The sound and acting is decent as well. It's actually pretty cool to hear soldiers scream in agony after you lop off one of their legs.

Overall, Dark Sector is a fun game and has introduced some awesome ways to fight enemies with the Glaive. The story could use some beefing up though, because it really doesn't motivate you to keep moving forward. The concept is great, but the rollout of the story needs to be more intriguing.
