It's that time of year where everyone is counting down everything of the past year. And of course we have to talk about the best video games of the year. The folks at 1up.com have launched their game of the year awards and boy do they have a long list of nominees. Take a look.

Based on their list of nominees, this is who I'm picking:

Best Action Game: God of War 2 - From the story to the game play and the action, the game is almost flawless. We just need it on PS3 next time.

Best Adventure Game: Tomb Raider Anniversary - Yeah, the game is too fresh. It's nice when classic titles get reinvigorated with new energy.

Best Wrestling/Fighting Game: Viruta Fighter 5 - If it ain't broke don't fix it right? Still one of the best fighting franchses of all time.

Best Puzzle Game: Lumines Plus - I'm not a big puzzle game dude, but Lumines was the only one I played.

Best Racing Game: Motorstorm - Love the graphics, love the controls. It just needed something else though.

Best Role Playing Game: Mass Effect - Hands down! You read my review right?

Best Shooting Game: BioShock - Most of the world will say Halo 3, but BioShock has really pioneered something here. The game is a classic.

Best Sports Game: NBA 2K8 - What? You're still playing NBA Live? It's time to move on brother.

Best Strategy Game: n/a - I haven't played any of those games. Not really interested either.

Best Multiplayer Game: Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare - Yeah, it's insane. You have to check it out.

Best Music Game: Guitar Hero III - It's the only one I played on the list. But it's still dope.

Best Console Downloadable Game: Warhawk - This game is crazy fun. From flying planes, to driving tanks to just frontlines combat, all online-only... you'll be addicted for hours.

Game of the Year: Mass Effect - It's a tough decision with so many great game that out this year like BioShock, Halo 3, Guitar Hero 3, Call of Duty 4 and a host of others. But Mass Effect really wrapped me up the most. I can't wait until the sequels.
