I really didn’t get into the Guitar Hero thing until Guitar Hero II on Xbox 360. I had heard about how it was like a “rock” version of Dance, Dance Revolution, so I kind of skipped out on it. You know, I’m too fresh to be playing some silly fake music game. I got a rep to uphold. But I broke down, picked up the guitar and got hooked. I beat the game on Easy, and then on Medium, got half way through Hard and wasn’t good enough to even give Expert a shot. But I was still rocking out like a mad man; so you know that Guitar Hero III was on my shortlist of must-have games this fall. It definitely lives up to its expectations.
Even if you haven’t played the Guitar Hero franchise, you can pick it up and get busy. One of the main differences I noticed with GH3 is the difficulty is ramped up quite a bit. Even on Medium, when it was easy to hit 100 percent of the notes on GH2, there are a few chords that’ll cause you to stumble. A new addition to the game is Battle Mode, where you can battle Tom Morello (of Rage Against the Machine fame), Slash (of Guns n’ Roses fame) and the Devil himself. There’s a split screen, and the purpose of the battle is to not fail the song, while trying to make your opponent fail. During the battle, you can snag power-ups by hitting a string of “star” notes. The power-ups range from bolts of lightening, cutting guitar strings, ramping up the difficulty, switching the notes backwards and various other weapons. You can also battle people online and if you have an extra guitar, battle your friends next to you.
There are more than 100 songs that include classic joints from Santana, Beastie Boys, Aerosmith, Iron Maiden, Metallica, Pearl Jam, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Slayer, Black Sabbath, and a host of others. Plus songs you can download from Xbox Live from the Foo Fighters, Velvet Revolver and other upcoming songs. Guitar Hero III will give you an appreciation for classic and new rock and will have you wanting to join a band, go on tour, and rock a million faces. Man, this game is addictive.
Q’s RATING: 5 out of 5
