The New Yankee Stadium. It's a project with a whole lot of hype. And it's all going down right in the South Bronx. It's looked as an opportunity to bring in more money, more jobs & opportunities in the Bronx. However, from what I've read there will be more boxed seating and less of the bleacher seats. Which typically the bleachers are the seats for those who pay the least and sit the furthest away. Even those seats seem to be leaving. The site for the New Stadium is 2 blocks from where i live. Construction has not stopped. Everyday more trucks, more dirt, more trucks, more trailers. Its amazing to see how fast and quick they can build the new stadium but not to build more schools or community centers. More big named stores are coming in, and today as i walked on 167th street many of the mom and pop shops i knew living in the neighborhood for over 20 years... to see them be closed down is sad. I never thought the staples of the community would just close. This is gentrification at its finest. People are not sure if it's coming, the buzz is in the buildings. But let me assure you, this seems like a train that has no last stop, this one is gonna keep going. The south bronx is changing. I'm not sure whose going to be living here in the next couple of years, but i hope they treat it right.
What happens to a neighborhood when a huge stadium is plopped right into the middle of it? There is traffic, noise and a cloud of dust that never seems to settle.
I only know that their is more headaches to come... with the old stadium still running it's last year of operation. So that means buses with fans for that stadium which is literally right across the street from the other. And trucks for the new stadium.
Not to mention that the site of the new stadium, had an old track & field race track. That race track was important to the neighborhood. I remember many relay races & baseball games, riding my bike, eating coquito's. Sitting by the rocks that went as high up as a tiny mountain top, with my dad & sister eating mc donalds. I will never forget those moments. Now a huge stadium is on top of it. Crushing it all. I look forward to seeing what happens, but i'm not confident in the politicians and the business people invested in this project. It seems that money is at the bottom line not the people. and that SUCKS !

Dukes,
It was the politicians responsibility to make sure Yankee officials put a huge percentage of Bronx residents to work as a result of the deal originally made. Of course no one went back to check until very recently and found all kinds of issues with the way things are being run at the stadium.
Hopefully the stadium will be good for el barrio and put a lot of minorities to work when the stadium opens... Bronx residents as was promised!
