In December 2007, I was asked to play the leading role in Sofia Quintero's aka Black Artemis' book trailer for PICTURE ME ROLLIN. Which is like a short film to promote the book. I played Espe (Esperanza) a young afro-latina who loves to rhyme and adores Tupac. I've acted in plays, film.. however this is my first leading role. I was excited to play a complex Latina, and whose more than just a girl from around the way. Many times in auditions or castings, i get called in to play the crackhead, the gang leader or the gang leaders best friend. Don't even let me get started on the whole light skin vs. dark skin Latinas in Hollywood. And who said that dark skinned latinos always have to play the bad (evil) characters? I'm saying.. i'm afro-latina but damn, i know there's much more out there for us, for me. So i give props to people like Zoe Saldana whose a darker skinned latina...trying to break that glass ceiling. Of course to Sofia Quintero an Afro-Latina from the Bronx, who went to an ivy league school, who holds it down by being book and street smart. A published author, she wrote this book along with a bunch of others. Casted me in it, and then directed it! So hold that ! Hollywood doesn't tell you these stories. I'm glad i have a venue to be able to speak on it, and let you know.
It's not easy for any artist of color, but i do know if the scripts and gigs are not coming to me, then im going to create it for myself. Or surround myself with people who share that vision. That's why it's important to write, direct, produce, act.. understand all of the business.
Am i right? Dark skinned Latinas need love too !

In this hardcore novel of love and betrayal, a female ex-con moved by the power, poetry, and dangerous passion of Tupac Shakur has plans to play it straight and do the right thing for her future survival. But her lover Jesus, the man she went to prison for on a gun possession charge, is intent on bringing her back into his game. She finds herself caught between inescapable yet contradictory forces-the passion for the streets and the inspiration of her conscience, just like her idol Pac. With righteous anger to burn, she's got to pull her life together before it's too late.
