Latinos and the Oscars

In the history of the Academy Awards, there has been a handful of Latino Actors who have been honored with a nomination and even far less have actually taken the prestigious award. But there has only been one Latino to have actually won the BEST ACTOR category...(and he just so happens to be Puerto Rican). His name...Jose Ferrer...
Jose won for "Cyrano De Bergerac" in 1950.
Since then, no other Latino has taken the grand prize home. But who cares...does an Oscar really mean you're the BEST ACTOR?
Then in 1952, Anthony Quinn won Best Supporting Actor for "VIVA ZAPATA"
And he won again in 1956 for "LUST FOR LIFE". It wasn't until 1961 that a Latina finally got one. Of course we all know it was Rita Moreno grabbing a Best Supporting Oscar for "WEST SIDE STORY"
That was in 1961, and a Latino didn't touch another Oscar until another Latina came in the picture in 1991, exactly 30 years later. It was Mercedes Ruehl, for Best Supporting Actress in "THE FISHER KING"
The guys finally came back when Benicio Del Toro got it for Best Supporting Actor in "TRAFFIC"
That was in 2000. Since then we've had nominations, but no grand prize. But I ask you again, does it matter? Probably not, but I'm still writing about it anyway.

I think Rita Moreno should have been "maria" in west side story. The actress that played Maria-- can't remember her name. She is not boricua and have a horrible spanish acccent!
Eventually latinos will be recognized for the bigger roles-- hopefully
