Have You Met...

B-Boying is not DEAD

After the passing of renowned B-Boy Frosty Freeze two weeks ago there has been much talk about the status of b-boying. It makes me wonder, is the art form dead? What happened to its legacy? Was it just a fad to be exploited in 80’s mainstream movies such as Flashdance and then forgotten? Well I got my answer this weekend in the form of a documentary entitled Planet B-Boy.

The documentary tells the story of breakdancing as it is now, worldwide. A movement that began in the streets of New York has evolved to an inspiring art form relatable to a new generation across the globe. Each year a worldwide battle taking place in Germany brings the lives of these breakdancers together as they fight for not only the number one spot, but to validate themselves as dancers to their communities.

Planet B-Boy was not only full of mind-blowing, animated moves; it also explored the struggles of the dancers as individuals. Focusing on the teams from France, America, Korea and Japan it was a lesson in how hip-hop truly transcends boundaries of language and race. While it may seem that b-boys are long forgotten in our country, the movement is still very alive and well worldwide.
