Almost two weeks from today on September 4, 2008 (10 days before I turn 19 years old), Senator John McCain will take to the stage at the 2008 Republican National Convention in Minneapolis – Saint Paul before millions of people around the world as he accepts the historic nomination for President of the United States. And you know what? I’ll be there!
It seems now that since I officially won the Crash the Parties contest, everybody wants to talk to me. You name it: television, newspapers and local politicians, have directly congratulated me and requested interviews. And lucky for them, I have a lot to say.
Like I said in my original contest profile, I’m not embarrassed to say that I’m a proud Latino, a proud Republican, and a proud American. We’re as diverse politically as we are geographically in the United States. Personally as a young Latino, I’m extremely excited for this Presidential election, and the fact that John McCain is the most qualified Presidential Candidate.
In a Newspaper Interview to be released next Tuesday, I was asked, “Which currently serving senator do you most admire? Why?
I said, “I greatly admire Senator John McCain because he is a true American hero. He was a POW in North Vietnam for 5 ½ years. When offered early release, he said no because his fellow POW, Everett Alvarez, a Mexican American, was still being held captive. In Washington, he has always followed his beliefs and worked across party lines on important key issues earning the nickname, “The Maverick”. Few have received such high praise from both Democrats and Republicans than John McCain. It comes to me as no surprise that today; John McCain is the Republican Presidential Nominee. He’s the right person at the right time to lead our country, and that is why he has not only my support but the support of many Americans across the United States.”
Facts speak louder than pretty words. When the reporter told me that Democrats are ahead in attracting Latino support I said,
“I disagree. That would depend on the section of the country you ask, because the U.S. Latino community is not a monolithic voting bloc. John McCain co-authored the bi-partisan comprehensive immigration reform bill, which Obama ultimately voted against through 5 “poison pill” amendments designed by special interests. The Republican Party supports the US-Colombia Free Trade Deal, while Democratic leadership in Congress created new rules to not even allow a vote on it. We’ve seen from these actions and more that Democrats are against bringing prosperity to Latin America, and working to solve issues across the board that affects Latinos in the U.S.”
When you tune in to my report from the Republican National Convention, you will hear from respected Republican Latino public figures and their take on important issues to our community. You will learn interesting facts, backgrounds, and their take on the whole election.
So please, join me in this journey. I guarantee you, exciting things will happen.
