Went to the movies last night for the first time in a looong while.  Is it me, or did 2007 produce an overload of duds?  The Oscar nominations were released rather recently and not one title on the list really seemed to grab me. But, rather than base my judgements on any preconceived notions, I made a point to go and check out at least one the buzzworthy flicks from the list.

My choice? Juno.  It seemed like a quirky, homespun independent-stlye comedy that didn't fall into one of those 2+ hour epic categories ("There Will Be Blood"). So how was it?  In my opinion, it was O-K.  A solid 3 Stars.  Lighthearted, funny in parts, quirky performances...but nominee for Best Picture of the Year?  My gut reaction says no. Films like "Garden State" were just as good (if not better than this), but never made the Best Picture cut.  So why is Juno showered with praise?  For critics, it sounds like they had slim pickings this year.  A shortage of knock-em-dead movies worthy of the Four Star treatment.

All I'm saying is if you're willing to stretch the boundaries of Best Picture nominees beyond hardcore tearjerkers to include Juno, why not show some love to 2007's true overlooked gem?
