What up ya'll.

So i wrote this last month and have been meaning to post for a while. It's the first time I'm putting this out there, so tell me what you think. I got inspired when I was in Chicago doing a show with Bassey Ikpi and she did a piece about Britney and I was like, "WORD! I been thinking about Britney too!" And i hadn't written a word in months, so thanks to Bassey for breaking my writers block!

Dear God
I am sending this
to you
on behalf of Britney Spears
you might know her.
we all seem to think we do.
but really
I think she just scares the hell out of us
reminds us how little we know ourselves
when we look at her
maybe this explains the national obsession with her
maybe her public meltdowns remind us
how far we are from the edge of sanity
in a world where we’re told to purchase our self esteem
told to shop until we drop our sense of self into a pile of debt
told to hide our sense under layers of expensive clothes
told to squeeze our integrity into tight shoes
yea
it’s fashionable to play small these days
God my heart goes out to her
it really does
I’ve never lived my life
my entire life
in the public eye
never been blinded into believing flashing bulbs measure my worth
but people have witnessed a few bad decisions I’ve made
ive lost friends, been talked about and judged
just like her.
people have thought events in my life were up for public discourse
and I know so many women
myself included
who have wanted a little more attention
a little more love a little more understanding
to feel like we matter
to someone
anyone
God we all have moments
where we feel so lost
the only difference is
our confused faces don’t get splashed on front pages
to ease people’s thirst for superiority and self rightousness
sometimes it seems like
peoples feelings have dried up
and they are desperate for something to pour their self loathing into
but don’t get it twisted
we all know
deep down
in the core of us
that everyone is a reflection
of everyone
maybe that’s why we dismiss her
our shadow
so quickly
so easily
its so easy
to believe we are not loved
to be convinced of our insignificance
and mediocrity is so seductive in it’s simplicity
we’ve fallen in lust with the status quo
set the bar so low
we don’t feel it under our feet anymore
God
I pray she finds her way back to the most beautiful part of herself
I wish her water
and the weightlessness only water can bring
I wish her fast moving waters
and the cleansing only rivers can bring
I wish her water fluid and simple
like a puddle her baby boys might jump into
I wish her sunshine
and yellow roses
skipping stones and quiet from the chaos
quiet from the world
I wish her love God
I wish her love
lots and lots of love
and I wish us able to look in a mirror
and see
her.
