Have You Met...

Are you ready for super tuesday?

Are you ready for tomorrow?

I ask that metaphorically and literally. This election is history in the making and I sincerely hope you plan to participate in changing the face of our tomorrow.

I know a lot of people have been disillusioned by the world of politics and rightly so. And maybe there are people who think participating in politics is naive and dumb. I choose to believe that change and transformation and peace and the possibility of a government that works for the people is possible. Thats a choice I consciously make because to do otherwise to me,  is an easy cop out to holding myself responsible for what I do to improve the face of the country I was born in. We all have many grievances and I have heard people say " How can this government ever work for us when it never had "us" in mind in its creation? If Obama gets elected, they'll just assassinate him. Politics is corrupt it will never change. Politicians are always corrupted by politics."

Based on what we "see" these may all be true and valid statements. Based on "reality" it is easy to give up hope and trying to change the world. Reality. At the show i did a few weeks ago Saul Williams said we agree on what reality is. It is a group agreement. Scientists have been telling us for years that "race" does not exist. There's no scientific data supporting the theory of race. It is a social construct that we have all agreed upon. If we all wanted to, we could change that in a day. So what are we agreeing on?

I guess in my mind I think of the countless women and African Americans who gave blood, sweat, tears, and often their lives because they believed their vote could make a difference. They made a group agreement to fight for the vote and they got it. We could sit and come up with 101 reasons as to why things will never change, as to why the US government sucks, as to why this and why that etc. etc. etc.

But our complaining and our group agreement that it will never change does absolutely nothing to change things either.

I'm not telling you who to vote for, I'm not even telling you to vote. If you feel participating in this system compromises your integrity in some way, and you feel you are actively working towards improving the conditions of all human beings, then I can support your decision. If on the other hand, you are not voting because you think it just doesn't matter, I urge you to think again.

Gandhi said to be the change you want to see. And we all know the power that ONE person can make in the lives of millions.

Mayda,

I love the "be the change" line... Thanks for sharing that with those who choose to speak it but don't want to be it! One Love, Ivan Sanchez
