Belated Movie Review: La Misma Luna

Let me start by saying that this is a GOOD movie! We're often told to support Latino cinema only to be duped into watching some caca that should've stayed on the shelf (Tortilla Soup, Gigli (LOL. It was on cable, it's worse than they say.)). Not in this case, La Misma Luna was the child of Patricia Riggen, an incredibly talented lady, who hopefully has a long, long career ahead. In an interview she says, "Being a director was like being an astronaut. Something nobody could become." She's shown us the way.

The story revolves around Carlitos separated from his mother Rosario by the border and trying to make ends meet. Given his circumstances, Carlitos decides to sneak into the US to find her. The stuff he goes through would send any mother into super freak out commando mode. So if you take your 'ama, bring some tissue. Two boxes should do it. There are laughs in this touching movie as well so you'll leave the theater pleasingly bittersweet.

Acting ruled the movie with excellent turns from Kate del Castillo who I last saw in Muchachitas (damn I'm old) and didn't know she had the chops; Eugenio Derbez who steals every scene; Carmen Salinas and Maria Rojo, two broads who can do no wrong. Of course Adrian Alonso as Carlitos proved a very engaging young actor as well.

Along the way, Riggen and co-author Ligiah Villalobos could've taken the movie into Lifetime special of the week mode, but they keep us on our toes with the story. Even if Riggen had gone more cliche, we wouldn't have cared. We would've grabbed another tissue, dabbed laughter or tears from our eyes and poked our neighbor and said, "te gusta la pelicula"? Afterwards, one of the moms wagged her finger at us and said, "See what we had to go through so that you guys could get an education?" Sheepish nods.

We packed six Mexicans into a Chevy Lumina to go watch La Misma Luna. (Hi LALO!  Look here!  And L.) Stuff as many folks as you can into that compact car and get to the movies!
