On November 26, 2007, at 1:45 a.m. Sean Taylor (Washington Redskins Safety) was shot with an Uzi (WTF?) in the upper leg by an armed intruder at his Palmetto Bay, Florida home, critically wounding him by severing his femoral artery. His long-time girlfriend Jackie Garcia, niece of actor Andy Garcia, hid under the bedding with their 18-month-old daughter, also named Jackie. Garcia then called 911 from her cell phone.  

On November 27 at 3:30 a.m., Taylor died at the hospital.  He was 24. There was four men arrested all not a day older than 20 years old.

This post is long overdue, but it finally hit me; I let myself cry for the words I couldn’t say, for the family who faces a lifetime of memories as trade for a son, for this unnecessary death and for the awful truth: this could have been our own family members’ funeral.  

In the days that followed the funeral I called my sister and told her of Sean Taylor’s death and a shooting that could have been prevented.  Take the time to have a short conversation about safety and decisions; this could prevent a crisis in your own family.

Truly, to inspire people after death is one of the greatest gifts we can give the living.  Share with me in a moment of silence…but wait before we do I need to get something off my chest: CAN WE PASS STRONGER STRICTER GUN LAWS???
