Have You Met...

Chatting with Zoe Saldana & Matthew Fox

The only thing I knew about the movie Vantage Point prior to seeing it last night, was that it starred Matthew Fox. Quite frankly, at the time, that was all I needed to know considering I *heart* Lost. I've been an avid watcher since season one and stuck with it even though there were times I wished it would just come to an end already and stop throwing curveballs at me. And yet, with several seasons still on the horizon, I still watch. Apparently, I love suffering... Anywho!

I arrived at the premiere with a few coworkers and Jaime (JFernz). We tried to get a glimpse of the red carpet but the theater ushers tried taking us out as if we were snipers. Reassured we'd be up close and personal with the stars at the premiere, we settled into our seats and jumped on the viewing ride. Within the first minutes I realized Zoe Saldana was in the movie. I nudged Jaime, "I want to meet her!" There are some Latina actresses that I want to support purely because they are Latina. And there are few that I want to support because they are actually great actresses. Zoe is of the latter category, and I don't believe she's yet been given the credit she deserves. Her performance in Vantage Point was short, but powerful. I was scared with her.

Overall, the movie was good. I can hardly get into details without ruining the whole plot for any of you actually wanting to see it. It was shorter than I expected and before we knew it, the credits were rolling. Jaime needed to hit the John, so I stepped into an empty corridor to wait for him. As he walked away, his spot next to me was replaced by Matthew Fox. My heart thumped. Jack was next to me. (Jack who loves Kate who loves Sawyer, but wait doesn't she love Jack too?) I looked around. No one was yet aware that Matt was in this space, it was my opportune moment. I touched his arm softly, excused myself and asked him if he'd be ok with taking a quick pic. He smiled and said, "Sure." As we took the pic I told him how hard it was for me to accept who he was in the film since I'm so used to him being Jack (you'll have to see the movie to get what I'm talking about.) This made him smile, at which point I quickly thanked him and scurried away before the onslaught of fans found him. With victory in my step, I handed my camera over to Jaime and smiled so big I nearly gave myself wrinkles.

We boarded the bus that took us to the after party at the Metropolitan Club. We roamed the elegant venue with wine glasses in hand and bumped into my co-worker who was gleaming because she too had a moment to chat with Matt. Soon thereafter the rest of the cast blended into the crowd. Sigourney Weaver is not only tall as all hell, but magnificently beautiful. Forrest Whitaker has a modelesque wife whose clothes I'd love to borrow even if only for 1.5 seconds. Dennis Quaid was surrounded by friends and kept adorably close to his wife.

As Jaime and I came down from the balcony of the space, we were stopped by a smiling man who asked us what was up the stairs. I didn't know him from a hole in the wall, but he just seemed like a cool guy. He was obviously Latino and we wondered if he'd stopped us because we were probably the only other Latinos in the building. We stopped in a ballroom where I finally spotted Zoe. She was about to pass me when I grabbed her attention with an, "Excuse me, Zoe?" Her smile brightened instantly and within the first few seconds of our conversation you would have thought she and I had met at least a few months ago. She was so warm, appreciative and down to earth. She told us that the film was made in Mexico (which answers Jaime's question as to why all the "Spaniards" looked Mexican), that she got sick while on location and advised me I should always bet on things that are being debated with my boyfriend (it's what she does with her husband). She took a photo with us and thanked us for coming then we let her move on. Instant female hetero crush!

Moments later the guy who asked us about upstairs resurfaced and I smiled and asked him if he'd liked what he saw. Next thing you know we're chatting it up with him and he turns out to be Zoe's cousin. The fact that this guy was so chill and fun was just another reflection of how humble Zoe is. If I, or anyone I know/work with, reach a point of fame where we are the center stars of events like this, I want those important to me along for the ride. I want abuela to hang out with Sigourney, and my cousin from the Bronx to shoot the shit with Forrest. So for now, I'll just keep crossing my fingers ;o)
