May Day Freedom Festival-New York City

May 1st, International Workers Day, commemorates the historic struggle of working people throughout the world and is widely celebrated in every country except for the United States. On this day, let us acknowledge and celebrate the contributions of workers and immigrant laborers to Hip Hop culture; indeed without them Hip Hop would have never emerged. We, the Hip-Hop generation, stand in solidarity with workers' and immigrants' struggle for basic human rights and dignity. The same institutions that aim to incarcerate our black and brown youth are separating immigrant families thru workplace raids and deportations; The same system that fails to provide adequate public schooling for our children fails to offer fulfilling jobs with living wages when they grow up....The same system that failed Sean Bell's family....the same system that deported Elvira Arellano and millions more....We scream for Black and Brown Unity!!! In every community!!!...On May 1, 2008, Periodistas de La Esquina and Rebel Diaz presents the May Day Freedom Fest at the Bowery Poetry Club in lower Manahattan. A night of celebration and unity, there will be feature performances by Rebel Diaz, NYOIL, and Kalunga Neg Mawon, with DJ Chela and legendary pioneer Dj Disco Wiz, the first latino Hip Hop DJ, on the 1s and 2s. Showtime is at midnight. Party until 3am
