When I was 15 the only things I was worried about were my next assignment for English class, buying cassette tapes (yes, I’m that old), and hanging out at the mall with my friends. I didn’t have that interesting of a life. Granted, I wasn’t on a TV show and wasn’t performing concerts that sold out in minutes. And my dad didn’t create a song that was famous for being one of the cheesiest country songs in history. But I don’t think that ANYONE has done anything interesting enough that they should be writing their memoirs at the age of 15. That is why I started laughing when I read that “Hannah Montana” star Miley Cyrus has signed a deal to tell the story of her life under the Disney Book Group. The memoir is scheduled to be released in spring 2009 and Cyrus said she “..hope(s) to motivate mothers and daughters to build lifetimes of memories together and inspire kids around the world to live their dreams.” The book will also feature previously unseen photos, family stories and will focus on the guidance of Leticia, Cyrus’ mother. It is more of a look into the family life, but still? What exactly could a girl of 15 have to write about? I mean, ok, she has been singing and acting for a few years and is the daughter of a semi-famous country star, but other than that what could she possibly have to say? There are famous actors, artists, singers, etc, who have done amazing things in their life and have never written a book about it. Yet here comes a country girl with a couple years under her belt of acting and signing and she thinks people want to hear what she has to say? Sure, she made something like $17 million on her concert tour and everywhere I go I’m barraged with Hannah Montana merchandise. And I guess she is a good role model for little girls and tweens since she doesn't seem to be drinking and screwing around (at least not in public). But I still don’t buy that there is anything so important that it needs to be put into a book and sold to the public. Maybe a Miley blog would be a better place to start. Or perhaps she could put out one of those cheesy little paperbacks that they used to sell in the 70’s and 80’s about TV stars. It was a bunch of pictures and some fluff taken from magazine articles and you usually got them from that school ordering thing, I think it’s called Scholastic something or other. The sad thing is that I know the book is going to sell fabulously because all the little girls who watch the show and made their parents pay scalpers hundreds of dollars for a concert ticket are going to buy the damn book. Hell, she will probably outsell Gandhi’s books and I’m pretty sure that Gandhi did just a little bit more for the world than Miley Cyrus. What a travesty!
