Last week I was faced with a question many of you have experienced at some point this winter - How the hell do I pass the time sick in bed so that I don't go crazy?? Being bedridden for two days ended up being a blessing because I just so happened to have borrowed a lil DVD collection from a friend of mine a couple weeks before. Ladies and gentlemen, I was saved from insanity by Ugly Betty Season One.
Okay, so I'm sure many of you are like me and don't have the time to watch TV right? (other than SiTV of course :-D) And you've probably all heard all this talk about how Ugly Betty is "changing the face of TV" and winning awards and creating this Betty hysteria, right? Well, at least in my opinion, the hype is true!!
I actually managed to sit through 23 one-hour episodes of the series in a period of two days, and let me tell you, by the end of it I was on the edge of my bed!! I was avoiding phone calls! I was ordering out food because I didn't even want to spend 10 minutes in my kitchen away from the Suarez that could!
And the funny thing is, I hate telenovelas.
Even though Betty Suarez is just a character on TV, she has inspired me (and yes, I know I am a 26-year-old grown-ass woman who should probably listing world leaders or authors as my inspiration.) Betty works in the most superficial place and manages to always make her values front and center. No matter how much lying is going on around her, she still tells the truth. No matter how much people show their worst colors to her, she still believes the best in them. And she does it all without letting everyone else's negativity, materialism, or manipulation get to her.
She may be a Hollywood creation, but I have to admit, watching that girl in action has really changed my outlook and behavior this last week for the better. I probably sound crazy, but I've been thinking about making a bracelet that says WWUBD? (Ok so not really, but the question of "what would Betty do?" does pop up in my head more often that I would like to admit...)
I really recommend that you take the time to watch the show. This TV Latina is truly ispiring. To watch her do her thing AND see her family deal with the reality of illegal immigration and deportation in a way that personalizes it so much more than the general public is used to... Now that's television that I want to see!
