My Empowered Flower

This week I had a little reunion with the cast of last year's NYC V-Day Vagina Monologues performance (yep, I did a bilingual "My Short Skirt!") and I was struck by the work of another one of the cast members, so much so that I have to share the news and get the word out! Last year when we were doing the show, a jewelry designer got involved. She made a little flower piece that looks kinda like a... well, you know. Someone took the reigns in selling them to our circle as a benefit to the woman and center in Africa we were raising money for with the play. Now, a year later, that same cast member went the extra mile and created an organization that sells these beautiful little jewelry pieces and sends all proceeds directly to that same center, the Tsaru Ntomak Rescue Center just west of Nairobi, Kenya.
CAN YOU IMAGINE??
What an example!! Thanks to her, any woman can buy an "empowered flower" and wear it in solidarity with women around the world, besides the fact that buying one actually sends money to the revolutionary woman who started the rescue center, Agnes Pareyio. I was lucky enough to meet Agnes (and Eve Ensler!) last year through our performance, and she is a stunning human being to behold. She alone has saved hundreds of girls in the African countryside from undergoing the same genital mutilation she had to endure as a child. Not only that, but her center has become a haven for women suffering all sorts of sexual abuse. Despite threats to her life and a constant struggle to find support for her efforts, she has carried on because she knew it was the right thing to do!
So here's the good stuff: you can support the work of Agnes AND wear a symbol of solidarity and pride of female sexuality thanks to my girl Andrea Gottschall who is now selling the beautiful jewelry pieces online and sending the proceeds to Agnes in Kenya. Just e-mail her at empoweredflower@gmail.com or call her at 203-913-4478 to see what pieces she has. (I know she also has a website but don't think it's finished yet - www.myempoweredflower.com)
Shoutout to Earwings for designing the beautiful and inspiring piece!
I hope you take a minute to really think about supporting this cause! Holla at me with any questions!
