RE: identity controversy
_______________________
Dear Jessica,
Please forgive me. I recently read your cover story in Latina magazine regarding the controversy surrounding you and what had appeared to be your indifference and denial of your Latin heritage. After hearing your side of the story and not that of a cynic, reporter, blogger or any other public personality speaking or writing on the subject with nothing more than some out-of-contexts quotes on hand, I have to apologize for believing the hype. Expecially since I chimed in a couple times myself... oops.
Kudos to Latina for the interview and story. I'm glad they made the decision to piss a couple people off and put you on the cover.  Thankfully they shook the dirt out of the rug of this whole misunderstanding.
Congratulations on the baby. Best of luck!
Sincerely,
Carolina, another halfer who can relate
P.S. You look stunning embarazada. (That means pregnant, not embarassed... just in case you weren't sure...)

The Latina article went over how she basically grew up Mexican-American and always felt that she was, but in the past couple of years things she has said were taken out of context and blown out of proportion to make it seem like she was denying being Latina. She also said that some of the comments attributed to her were things she never said. I guess it all started when she couldn't speak Spanish at the Latin Grammys in Miami years ago and the Spanish press made her feel like caca. She was hurt and got defensive, and it was all a misunderstanding from there.
I totally relate to how she feels about not fitting in though. Even though she has tan skin, brown eyes, and the last name Alba, I could definitely see how not speaking Spanish would piss off the press of Miami. They are a tough crowd, and there's a huge clump of them who'd like to think they get to decide who's Latin and who's not. (Trust me I know. I used to live and work in media in Miami. They can be very unkind.)
What does it say! What does it say!!!!
