Best of 2007 - Celia the musical

2007 was a great year for the Broadway aspirations of Latino actors and storytellers. Not only did Lin-Manuel Miranda's original musical "In The Heights" sing and dance its way onto the Great White Way (see my other blog,) another off-Broadway Latino musical stirred up a buzz so loud that even Madonna came through to check it out. For those of you who haven't made it a point yet to see Celia, you better get off your culo and get those tickets before another batch of Upper-East-Side well-to-do fogeys yell "azucar!" without you. This is your cultural history; you gotta support and represent! What better way to spend your money than learning about one of the most prolific artists of the century and catching one hell of an amazing concert while you're at it?
Okay, I'll lay off the guilt trip now.
Packed with 33 of Celia Cruz' most loved songs, "Celia: The Life and Music of Celia Cruz" has garnered rounds of critical praise and been extended to run at least through to June. For those of you not in New York, the producers are working out details of a tour now!
When you go, be sure to check out a friend of mine, Grizel "Chachi" Del Valle doing her thing in the ensemble. Homegirl is a spitfire on the stage!
