Coin-operated car washes never die. The one down the street and had three stalls. It required more quarters than it said. The time allotted to rinse, wash, rinse, wax and then rinse again, was never enough. Quarters were as important as pampers for infants, you needed a bunch.
A coin-operated car wash wasn’t complete if it didn’t have vacuums. The middle vacuum was most powerful. It could inhale a brake pedal if you let it. It made noise like a factory, the tube was a boa constrictor, in through the passenger side doors to the drivers side.
Some men practically lived at the car wash. It was the cheapest way to wash your car if you lived in an apartment. They super-sized their wash by bringing their own tiles, wax and window cleaner. They opened all the doors so those who pass by can hear bass and treble be friends. The speakers stayed balanced, the rims got shiny, the tires wore Armor All like pimps wore patent leather. Seventy-five cent air freshener lasted 1 ½ days; cherry, pine, new car scent and vanilla.

reading this reminded me of when my parents would bring me to the car wash place when i was little...and they would vacuum it and the noise it made. i always wondered why they did it themselves and not pay someone to do it. well cuz it was cheaper ha
