Last Friday, I went to the Troubadour in West Hollywood to see Jens Lekman perform. He's this Swedish pop singer who has a quirky yet likable music style. It kinda reminds me of a 50's dance hall singer mixed with a bit of Paul Anka-like ballads. Yeah, what can I say? This Swede's got a unique thing going on! And I was blown away by his musical crew: 2 flutists/ violinsts (they interchanged their instruments throughout the show), saxophonist, trumpeter, piccoloist (is that even a word), oh and some guy doing the electronic sounds on his lovely macbook pro. Seriously, he has such an ensemble. But the best part is his voice and his lyrics. Here's some lyrics from my favorite song of his--Maple Leaves:
She said it was all make-belief
but I thought you said maple leaves
and when she talked about the fall
I thought she talked about the season
I never understood at all.
So freakin good. He makes misunderstandings into beautiful melodies that happen to have comedic subtlety. He just released the album Night Falls Over Kortedala in October. It’s good but I highly recommend 2005’s Oh You’re So Silent Jens.
